We are thrilled to share that Thorley House has been awarded the Pride in Practice Care Award by the LGBT Foundation, a recognition of our commitment to creating a truly inclusive, safe, and affirming environment for LGBTQ+ residents in our care. This award follows our participation in a pioneering trial programme selected by Wigan Council, and it represents a meaningful step forward for our team, our residents, and the wider care community.
Our journey to becoming a more inclusive care home
Our team took part in two dedicated training workshops led by Danny from the LGBT Foundation. These sessions explored inclusive language and modern LGBTQ+ terminology, how to identify and sensitively support residents who may have LGBTQ+ needs, and how to create a care environment where residents feel safe to be themselves. We also took the opportunity to review and strengthen our Sex, Sexuality and Relationships Policy, ensuring it reflects the dignity and individuality every person in our care deserves. As the team our care home noted:
Testimonials
“The training was incredibly informative particularly the explanation of terminology. It opened my eyes to how much more the LGBT Foundation can support care homes like ours”

Celebrating Pride at Thorley House
Thorley House in Wigan has been celebrating Pride for the past two years, and this June, we look forward to marking it with even more joy and colour. We believe that inclusion is something we live every day, not just a moment in the calendar, but Pride is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate identity, community, and belonging with our residents, their families, and our team.
