There’s a real warmth to daily life at Kingfisher care home in North Shields, where the week is shaped around the people who live here rather than a fixed timetable. From arts and crafts to live entertainment and quiet moments in the garden lounge, our lifestyle programme is designed to help every person feel seen, valued and involved. In this update, we take a glance at the meaningful activities for care home residents that make Kingfisher such a special place to call home, and why this approach matters so much for older people’s wellbeing.

What Everyday Life Looks Like at Kingfisher

Set close to the scenic Tynemouth seaside and the historic Tynemouth Priory & Castle, our purpose-built home offers a calm, welcoming setting with plenty of spaces to relax, socialise and take part. Residents can enjoy the sun lounge with its garden views, gather in one of our comfortable lounges, or explore their interests in the music corner.

Our ongoing weekly programme forms the hub of life at the home. Across the week, residents enjoy a wide variety of activities, including:

  • Arts and crafts, for creativity and self-expression
  • Quizzes, puzzles and games, which encourage friendly conversation and gentle mental stimulation
  • Movie nights and live entertainment, bringing people together to share music, laughter and familiar favourites
  • Horticultural therapy, offering a calming, hands-on connection with nature
  • Themed events, which give the whole home something to look forward to

Something for Every Interest

The activities team tailors sessions around each person’s likes, dislikes and previous hobbies, taking the time to learn what brings genuine enjoyment. A resident who once loved gardening might find real comfort in horticultural therapy, while someone who enjoys a challenge may look forward to the weekly quiz.

Barbara wished for a proper pub afternoon, so we took her to The Gunners Pub for a brilliant lunch and drinks. Making little dreams come true lets us share wonderful moments and bring big smiles to our residents.

Out and About

Kingfisher sits within a residential neighbourhood with close links to the surrounding area, and our coastal North Shields location means the wider community and its landmarks are never far away.

Empowering independence and preserving self-worth drive our personalised care approach, where residents actively shape their days through local shopping trips and vibrant community strolls.

Supporting Wellbeing and Meaningful Engagement

Behind every activity is a wider purpose. Creative sessions such as arts and crafts support confidence and a sense of achievement, while quizzes and puzzles offer gentle stimulation.

While a quick afternoon rest is wonderful, our residents truly shine during vibrant daily activities – from relaxing pampering and gentle movement to lively quizzes and our much-loved afternoon tea.

By tailoring our lifestyle programme to individual interests and offering one-to-one support where it’s needed, we make sure every resident can take part on their own terms. This person-centred care approach runs through daily life at Kingfisher and reflects the values shared across Minster Care Group’s homes.

Testimonials

“Kingfisher Care Home looks after all residents with care and respect. Taking time to make sure all their needs are met. Love that they are asked to make a wish and it is granted for them.”

A H Niece of Resident

“My mam became a resident of kingfisher around a year and a half ago and in that time I have found it to be a welcoming and friendly place for her to live. The staff are very caring and attentive and I feel they always have her best needs at heart. The home overall is clean and well looked after and the rooms comfortable and kept tidy by the domestic staff. I know mam enjoys the food and it always looks wholesome and varied. There is a selection of activities each day and they encourage residents to join in and be social. The medical staff are very aware of mams needs and always report anything I need to know. They are on top of everything that needs to be done. Overall I am very pleased that kingfisher is the place she now lives”
