Our wonderful resident Mae at Florence Grogan House in Cheshire has celebrated her incredible 109th birthday, a milestone marking more than a century of memories, family, and life-changing moments.
Mae’s Inspiring Life Story: From Westport to Chester
Born in Westport in 1917, Mae has lived through more than a century of history and witnessed remarkable changes around the world. At around the age of five, she moved from Westport to Cross on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean before settling in Leeds shortly after the Second World War. She later moved to Chester, where she raised five children and built the family that surrounds her today.

Royal Letters and Special Honours
Mae’s room at Florence Grogan House is adorned with treasured items celebrating her recent milestone birthdays. These include a certificate from Mayo County Council recognising her as the current oldest living Mayo person on her 108th birthday, a plaque from Pope Francis received on her 106th birthday, and personal letters from both Queen Elizabeth and King Charles.
