Florence Grogan House is a large, purpose-built home providing residential care and a specialist household for dementia care. The home has a long history and is a well established part of the local community. At Florence Grogan House we aspire to ensure that the home is a place where people want to live and work. We have an abundance of budgies, two adorable cats and many entertaining squirrels. As a team we strive to engage with residents and support them in all aspects of their daily lives. In seeking to do this we have a well motivated and well trained team of carers who understand that choice, courtesy and dignity are essential ingredients for a successful caring environment.
There are a number of lounges throughout the home. At least one lounge is fitted with a hearing loop, a discreet device to improve sound reception and aid those with hearing difficulties. There are also a number of dining areas. Florence Grogan has a memorabilia and tranquillity room, which offers a dedicated area where residents can relax and reminisce. It is in an accessible part of the home that contains meaningful objects from the past that can be touched and held. The gardens are a vibrant and well established part of the home. The patio areas are especially pleasant with an abundance of potted plants. Any opportunity to have a barbecue is seized upon weather permitting. The gardens are accessible, wheelchair and children friendly.
Additional services available to residents include a hairdresser who visits once a week, and newspaper and magazine deliveries which are arranged through a local newsagent. These services are charged on a weekly basis as used. There is also a shop trolley service for items such as greetings cards, toiletries, drinks and confectionery.
There is a regular programme of activities including bingo, pub lunches, board games, clothes parties, outings, karaoke, manicures, dominoes and card games, film clubs, shopping trips, library visits, social evenings, ‘movement to music’ and bowls. The Pat the Dog Scheme also visit every month, providing tremendous therapeutic value to residents who participate. Relatives and friends are encouraged to participate in home life through monthly social gatherings. These are often themed novelty evenings such as Caribbean, Mexican, or Greek nights. The home is also well integrated in the local community, and participates in the annual Blacon Festival.
Florence Grogan House is extremely well supported by a variety of local church groups. Service and Prayer meetings are held regularly, ranging from weekly to monthly. All denominations are welcomed and respected. The activity co-ordinator will facilitate any residents wishing to attend their local place of worship.
