During this time she has attended many training courses which have given her a greater understanding of the needs and care of the older persons, including courses on dementia both within the organisation and with the NHS.
There are 40 single rooms, including five with en suite bathroom facilities. All rooms have television points. The bedrooms have individual heating controls and the bathrooms contain specialist bathing equipment. Toilets are easily accessible on both floors.
Golborne House is set in spacious grounds, with a seating area set in a well maintained garden where residents and visitors can sit and enjoy the warm weather. Indoors, there are a number of pleasant lounge areas throughout the building, including one designated smoking area. We have a lounge diner on the first floor, with tea and coffee making facilities. Residents with dementia will benefit from the home having several lounge areas; as well as the quiet room. Some lounges do not have TV, whilst some are set aside for listening to music. Meals are served in the communal dining area, or alternatively in some smaller lounges, according to preferences. Residents can also choose to have their meal served in their room. There are signs on each corridor with the room numbers that can be found in that area. We also place furniture, plants and ornaments at strategic spots throughout the home to act as landmarks.
Additional services available to residents include a hairdresser who visits twice a week, and newspaper and magazine deliveries which are arranged through a local newsagent. These are charged on a weekly basis as used. There is also a shop trolley service offering items such as greetings cards, toiletries and confectionery.
The home has an activities co-ordinator who arranges trips out, in-house entertainment and many different daily activities. Anyone wishing to join in will be made most welcome and suggestions from residents on an individual basis will be accommodated if at all possible. Activities which currently take place regularly include arts and crafts, bingo, day trips such as picnics, barge trips and pub lunches, entertainers and a monthly Rotary Club visit offering a range of activities. The local Rotary Club also runs fun raising activities such as a summer fete for the home.
The home seeks to ensure that meals are a relaxed and enjoyable social time of day. There is a choice of menus daily and tea and coffee making facilities are available throughout the day for the use of residents and their visitors. Flexible hours are offered for breakfast, which can be taken between 8:15 and 10:15am.
The home has good links with local churches and can make transport arrangements for anyone wishing to attend regularly. Services also take place within the home. There is a Church of England service once a month and a Catholic service every Friday by request.
Golborne House is only a short walk from the village centre, where a wide selection of shops, hairdressing salons, banks, newsagents, post office, cafes, and a variety of food shops can be found. It is close to main motorway links and only a short ride away from Wigan, Liverpool, and Manchester. There is also a local bus stop outside the home.
