Services include a ten bed specialist household for older people with dementia. The home is approximately one mile from Ashton town centre. Set within spacious grounds, it has several lounges, a large dining area and an activity lounge. It is a single storey building, well-planned for residents who like to walk around the home due to its figure of eight layout.
Manager, Christine Hiley, is a well-qualified and experienced care professional. She holds care qualifications, assessor awards, first aid training and the Registered Managers Award. She has over 25 years’ experience in the care sector, with a strong track record both as a carer and a manager.
Garswood has 40 single rooms. All rooms have television points.
There are a number of pleasant lounge areas and around the building. One of the lounges is fitted with a hearing loop, a discreet device to improve sound reception and aid those with hearing difficulties. There is a large dining room or residents can eat in their own rooms if they prefer. There are many visual clues around the home to aid residents with short term memory loss. All corridors are clearly named and sign-posted, with all room numbers displayed. If requested, bedrooms can also have photographs on the doors, which can act as an additional prompt to help residents identify their room. The front door is fitted with a key pad lock which enables those who wish to move freely in and out, whilst providing an added measure of safety for those persons requiring it. There are a number of pleasant gardens, all of which can be accessed by wheelchair. The home has two internal gardens which are popular with residents as they allow unrestricted access to a secure area. One of the gardens has raised flower beds for those who wish to indulge in some gardening. Another provides a smoking area.
Additional services available to residents include a hairdresser who visits weekly, and newspaper and magazine deliveries which are arranged through a local newsagent. These are charged on a weekly basis as used.
Garswood House offers a range of activities catering for resident needs. On a regular basis we offer arts and crafts, exercise classes, quiz nights, karaoke evenings, pampering afternoons, gardening, shopping, clothes parties, bingo, music sessions, reminiscence afternoons, card games and dominoes. We also have regular entertainers visiting the home. During the summer months we have a barge trip which we plan each year. We also arrange trips to places of interest and to venues in the local area.
The home meals are served in a pleasant and relaxed manner, and a social atmosphere is promoted. The menu is varied and nutritious and we cater for special dietary requirements. Each month we also hold a theme night for all to enjoy where we can sample cuisine from different cultures.
A Eucharist minister visits Garswood to offer communion. We also can arrange for residents to attend Sunday service at the local parish churches. We are also currently arranging for the Gospel Hall to visit the home to sing hymns.
Garswood House is close to the local town centre, which offers a variety of shops, pubs and restaurants. It is also close to the Ashton Jubilee Park and the local library. Nearby attractions include The Three Sisters sailing club and Haigh Hall Country Park.
